Despite the numerous demographic studies that document a significant prevalence of men who are victims of domestic violence, this phenomenon is hidden for several reasons:

  • The shame men feel at being victims, while the socialization process prescribes masculine values such as strength and invulnerability;
  • The experience or fear among male victims that the social, police, and legal services give little credibility to their victimization;
  • The tendency of male victims to tolerate violence in silence for fear of losing their children;
  • The decision not to retaliate against the violence of the spouse for fear of the consequences of superior male physical strength and the damage it could cause to the spouse.

The victimization of spouses has a negative impact on their physical and mental health, as well as on that of their children. Convergence offers a support service for male victims of domestic violence.
